Understanding Jones County Released Inmates
There is no single universal released-inmate record in Jones County. The Jones County Detention Center records a county-jail departure. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction records a state-prison release or an event under state community supervision. The federal Bureau of Prisons records the end of BOP custody. A court case explains the order or judgment behind custody, but it does not act as a log of the moment a jail door opened.
“Released” also has more than one meaning. It may describe release to the community on bond, after time served, by court order, or when a local sentence ends. It may instead be a movement to another jail, DAC, a hospital, federal authority, or immigration custody. Parole and post-release supervision end confinement while state supervision continues. A dismissal may remove one legal basis for custody, yet another charge, warrant, or detainer may still hold the person.
Jones County Release Types Explained
The release-manner field is the key to reading a Jones County release transaction. Each label answers a narrower question than the word “released” suggests, so it should be read with the case and any destination agency.
- Bond
- Conditional pretrial liberty after the bond requirements are met. It is not an acquittal or a final case result.
- Time served
- A sentence outcome based on time credited or completed. The judgment provides the legal context.
- Court order or dismissal
- A legal event that can authorize release once staff validate it and clear every other commitment.
- Transfer
- Departure from the Jones County jail into another custodian, not a community release.
- Discharge or sentence complete
- The end of the stated agency or sentence authority, which can still coexist with another case or supervision record.
Can a court order and physical release have different times? Yes. Jail staff may still need to receive and validate the order, check other holds, close accounts, and return property. The jail transaction provides the physical departure time.
Note: A deceased entry is an end-of-custody event, but it must never be described as release to the community.
Jones County Release Record Fields
A useful request combines identity, booking, case, and movement fields. That mix helps separate namesakes and shows whether the Jones County Detention Center released the person to the community or moved the person elsewhere. Not every existing record will contain every field, and the requester should ask for records already kept rather than demand a newly calculated report.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Recorded name and birth detail | Identity information used to distinguish people with similar names. |
| Booking number and booking date/time | The specific Jones County custody episode and when it began. |
| Arresting agency | The agency connected to the booking, which may differ from the jail operator. |
| Charge and case number | The bridge to the matching Jones County court file and disposition. |
| Bond | The bond recorded in the booking or case, not proof that it was satisfied. |
| Release date and time | When the jail recorded the departure transaction. |
| Release manner or disposition | Whether the event was bond, court order, time served, sentence completion, or another type. |
| Destination agency | The next custodian when the departure was a transfer, detainer, writ, or agency handoff. |
The county publishes no roster retention interval or jail-management retention period. Web visibility and legal retention are not the same. If an older record is said not to exist, ask for the applicable records schedule and destruction authorization instead of assuming all release data expires after a fixed number of days.
Request a Jones County Release Record
Jones County provides a general public-record request intake form. The request should be narrow enough to identify the person and custody episode, and it should ask the Sheriff's Office for the actual booking and release transaction. Jones County does not publish a sheriff-specific copy price, response deadline, or records-unit hours, so request an estimate before costs are incurred.
- Give the full recorded name plus a date of birth, booking number, or another appropriate disambiguator.
- State the approximate booking and release date range and identify the Jones County Detention Center.
- Request the booking date/time, release date/time, release manner, related case number, and destination custodian for any transfer.
- Ask for an electronic copy or inspection and request an estimate of any ordinary copy or extensive-service charge.
- If a field is withheld, ask for the legal basis. If no record remains, ask which retention schedule and disposition authority apply.

North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 132 broadly covers records made or received in public business. Sections 132-6 and 132-6.2 address inspection, copies, formats, actual-cost fees, extensive-service charges, and the rule that an agency generally need not create a record that does not exist. Section 132-1.4 keeps criminal investigation and intelligence records nonpublic while preserving access to specified basic arrest and incident information.
Note: Ask for a release event, not a custom conclusion about a person's legal status or the meaning of every case.
Jones County Release Proof at the Courthouse
The Jones County jail occupies the courthouse basement at the 101 Market Street complex. That shared location can hide an important records split. The Clerk and the North Carolina eCourts Portal document the legal case, while the Sheriff and detention record document the physical departure and its destination.
Jones County has used eCourts since February 3, 2025. Portal Smart Search can expose parties, case number, case type, events, hearings, a register of actions, dispositions, and public financial information. A dismissal, bond order, or sentence is evidence of a legal event. It is not the jail's timestamp for receipt of the order, completion of identity and hold checks, property return, or transfer.
The Jones County Courthouse is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Clerk of Superior Court is at 101 Market Street, P.O. Box 280, Trenton, NC 28585, and may be reached at 252-448-6220. Public terminals can search criminal cases by defendant name or case number when the online view is incomplete.
The official court system explains how to obtain North Carolina court records. The captured court-record page below shows the proper source for case-file access, which complements rather than replaces the Jones County jail release transaction.
A matched case number lets the legal disposition and custody movement support each other without treating either source as a complete substitute.
Why Jones County Release Transfers Matter
The Jones County Detention Center is an unusually small, old jail. Its 18-bed courthouse-basement section dates to 1939, and three beds for females were added in 2009, bringing the published total to 21. The official detention-center page confirms the facility's identity, history, contacts, and custody rules.
That scale makes it especially important not to equate departure with community release. A person may go to court, another jail, a medical setting, DAC, federal authority, or ICE. No DAC prison is physically located in Jones County. Craven Correctional Institution in neighboring Craven County is a state processing center, but it is not a guaranteed placement for every Jones County transfer. Once DAC accepts a person, search the person in DAC OPI instead of assuming a prison assignment.
The official detention-center image below records the local source behind those facts.
The source does not publish a release door, waiting point, transportation plan, property-return process, or fixed release schedule, so those details must be confirmed with detention staff on the day involved.
Jones County Custody Fees at Release
The jail page publishes two unusually specific medical charges during custody: $20 for a sick-call visit and $10 for prescription medication. It also says indigent inmates are not denied care and that a charge may later be collected if funds enter the inmate account. These are custody-account facts, not a published release fee schedule.
No official Jones County source reviewed explains what happens to a medical-account balance after release. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim a balance is collected, waived, refunded, or transferred at the jail door. A person seeking an account statement or property reconciliation should ask detention staff what existing record is available and avoid treating the medical charges as a condition of release.
Note: The published sick-call and prescription amounts do not establish any charge for release processing, records, or property return.
Find a Released Jones County Inmate
The strongest search begins with the last known custodian. Jones County, North Carolina has no verified public jail roster or recent-release feed. A missing online name has no evidentiary value. Search engines also surface a polished roster from Jones County, Mississippi, so every result should be checked for North Carolina, an official domain, Trenton, and the 252 area code.
- Call the Jones County Detention Center at 252-448-7091 and ask whether the named person left county custody and whether the event was community release or transfer.
- Submit the narrow county request for the booking/release transaction when the exact timestamp, manner, or destination matters.
- Match the case number in eCourts Portal to identify the order, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or other legal event.
- If the jail identifies a DAC transfer, search the state offender record and inspect status, incarceration history, actual release events, and supervision history.
- Use NC SAVAN/VINELink for a participating-agency custody change and alerts, then verify the event with the source custodian.
- Use BOP, the federal case, or ICE ODLS only when the record points to federal or immigration custody.
A phone response may be limited and is not a durable record. Preserve the official URL, search date, exact status label, record number, source agency, and event date when using a dynamic portal. If a source changes later, the earlier capture may simply reflect an earlier point in the case or sentence.
Jones County DAC Release Search
The DAC Offender Public Information search is the central state source for people who entered North Carolina prison custody or community supervision. It is not a Jones County booking log. Someone who bonded out of the county jail without entering DAC custody may never appear. Search by the seven-digit offender number when known, or use name and available identity filters and then match the conviction county, sentence, offense, and admission chronology.
| DAC field or view | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Offender number | The strongest public search key for separating namesakes. |
| Inmate Status | The current state-prison status, which can be inactive while supervision remains active. |
| Incarceration history | Admissions, movements, and past release episodes in DAC custody. |
| Projected Release Date | A changeable calculation, not proof that release occurred. |
| Actual Release Date | A recorded sentence-episode release, strongest when read with inactive incarceration or expired service. |
| Probation/Parole/Post Release Status | Whether state supervision continues after confinement ends. |
| County, docket, offense, and sentence | Chronology and case links used to confirm the correct person and episode. |
DAC also has a separate Inmate Release Search. It can search Jones as a reported destination county plus year and month, or search by name. On the research date it offered 2024 through 2026 and returned offender number, name, release date, primary-offense qualifier, and type of release. It finds state-prison releases reported toward Jones County, not people who bonded out of the Jones County jail.
The official DAC search captured below is the correct entry point for a state record.
Open the likely match and read the full history. A past release can be followed by a later admission, and inactive incarceration can coexist with active supervision.
Jones County Recent Release Search Limits
The official Sheriff page, detention page, and county sitemap showed no roster, current-inmate search, 24-hour release list, 72-hour release list, photo archive, or North Carolina sheriff app as of July 30, 2026. There is no honest feed URL, update cadence, field list, photo behavior, or display-retention window to publish.
The same-name Mississippi result is not an alternative. Its released filter, photos, app, 601 telephone numbers, and Mississippi identity belong to a different agency and jurisdiction. For a Jones County NC same-day departure, call detention, request the release transaction, review the matching court disposition, and continue to DAC only if the departure was a state transfer.
Why is a released person not on the roster? A live roster, where one exists, describes present custody. A release event belongs in the retained jail record. Jones County does not publish either roster view, so online silence cannot distinguish release, transfer, a spelling mismatch, or no matching booking.
Note: The state DAC release search is a prison destination-county tool and cannot replace a Jones County jail release feed.
Jones County Release Status by System
Each source answers a different custody question. The most reliable conclusion uses the system that owned the event, then adds a second official source when the reason or destination is unclear.
| System | Still in custody | Released or moved |
|---|---|---|
| Jones County jail record | Open county booking or confirmed detention | Release date/time, manner, and destination transaction |
| eCourts Portal | Pending case events may explain authority | Disposition or order explains the legal event, not physical departure |
| DAC OPI | Active incarceration and current location | Actual release with inactive service, plus any active supervision |
| VINELink / NC SAVAN | Participating agency's current status | Custody-change notice that still needs source verification |
| BOP locator | Federal location or projected date | Past date with Released or Not in BOP Custody |
| ICE ODLS | Covered current immigration custody | Limited recent-release coverage; no result is not proof of freedom |
The North Carolina Sex Offender Registry is another narrow channel. It can identify a released adult who has a registration duty, but it is not a general list of Jones County released inmates. Absence from that registry establishes neither custody nor release.
Jones County Release Supervision and Alerts
DAC OPI may show probation, parole, or post-release supervision after prison confinement ends. An inactive Inmate Status beside an active Probation/Parole/Post Release Status means the person is outside state-prison confinement but remains under state supervision, subject to the live record. The North Carolina Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission sets post-release conditions, while DAC Community Supervision administers field supervision.
North Carolina SAVAN is delivered publicly through VINELink. County jail management systems and DAC data feed the statewide layer, though a missing result can reflect spelling, identity, feed, retention, or coverage behavior. A notice indicates that the source agency reported a qualifying change. A transfer notice does not mean the person entered the community. Preserve the notice and confirm its agency and timestamp.
Parole and probation require a status check distinct from the earlier release transaction. The Jones County parole and probation resource explains how supervision records, Commission authority, and the three-county supervising district fit together.
Jones County Federal Release Lookups
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward, not ordinary Jones County detainees or North Carolina state prisoners. Search by BOP or agency number when possible, or by name with age, race, and sex filters. A past release date with no listed institution and a Released or Not in BOP Custody status confirms only that BOP custody ended. Federal supervised release, another custodian, or immigration custody may remain.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator covers current ICE custody and a limited recent-release period. Use a nine-digit A-number and country of birth, padding shorter A-numbers with leading zeroes, or use exact name, birth date, and country of birth. It excludes minors. A Jones County record that says release to ICE describes a new immigration custody episode, not community release.
A federal pretrial detainee may be held for the U.S. Marshals in a contract facility and may never have a sentenced BOP record. In that situation, use the federal court case, the actual detaining facility, counsel, and the appropriate Marshals district. The Jones County jail record remains important when it identifies the handoff.
Note: “Not in BOP Custody” and a blank ICE search answer different questions and neither rules out all other custody.
Support After a Jones County Release
Jones County maintains a Recovery and Re-Entry Support page and participates in the Reentry Council of Lenoir, Greene & Jones Counties. This is a local route to community, legal, and reentry support after custody, not a source that certifies a release date.
The Trenton contact is John Baker at 418 Highway 58 North, 252-448-2581 extension 2020, or support@jonescountync.gov. The county page says an interest form should receive a response within three business days and lists Monday through Thursday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its displayed Friday closing time is incomplete, so Friday hours should be confirmed directly.
Release-day property details are also not posted. The jail's mail rules say senders should not mail original birth certificates, driver licenses, Social Security cards, or green cards because originals will be returned. That rule does not define property pickup at discharge. Ask the jail about personal property, identity documents, and record correction for the specific departure.
Jones County Release Facility
The only verified adult detention facility physically in Jones County is the 21-bed Jones County Detention Center at 101 S. Market Street, Trenton, NC 28585. It is operated by Sheriff Matthew J. Wineman's office. The most consistently published detention number is 252-448-7091; the facility page also displays 252-565-4899, and Administrator Jason Jarman is listed at extension 6000.
A direct departure may be release to the community, while another departure can go to court, another jail, DAC, a medical setting, federal authority, ICE, or another agency. The Jones County Detention Center release page keeps those facility-specific confirmation routes together. No state prison, federal prison, ICE center, or separate regional adult jail was identified inside Jones County.
